It is now illegal in Barcelona to contract any kind of graffiti work for the outside part of your business (walls, gates, doors etc). This is under a so called socialist/liberal government.

Wholetrain's Florian Gaag Interview

.:English:.

- The director of Whole Train was kind enough to send a promo copy of the new DVD of Wholetrain with subtitles and the CD of the soundtrack. This movie came out in 2006 but only in German. It's now being re released November 23, 2010 with subtitles in 14 different languages
: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Turkish, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Chinese (short & trad.). It also comes with extras which is the making of the movie. The soundtrack features exclusive tracks by KRS-ONE, PLANET ASIA, AFU-RA and others) will be released worldwide NOVEMBER 23, 2010. The DVD & CD will be distributed by Rykodisc. http://www.wholetrain.com

Toxik 'zine: First of all; Thank you for the promo copy of your movie. I enjoyed it very much with the subtitles this time. I noticed you included 14 different languages for your subtitles in this latest release. What is the process of getting your Movie subtitled in that many languages?

Florian Gaag: Some of the subtitle versions i got from the film festivals where „Wholetrain“ was shown, for some I had to pay, others I got for free. For the ones I didn't have I contacted a German cultural institute and sold them the non-commercial screening rights, in return they financed the translation and production of the subtitles.

TZ: What is your back round as a graffiti writer and as a film maker? any other projects you have done?

FG: I started writing back in 1984 and was active up until the early nineties. I went to film school in New York, did many shorts, documentaries and fictional films and started working on „Wholetrain“ after graduation. It took a while to get it made...

TZ: You filmed the movie in Munich and Warsaw. Why was it easier to get trains painted for the film in Warsaw?

FG: The German railway company refused to collaborate and informed all other railway companies about the project so it would be blocked. Luckily I had contacts in Warsaw, co-production partners who knew just how to talk to the officials.

TZ: - Was the cleaning crew OK buffing the whole train?

FG: At first all the guys working at the yard hated us. They showed us clubs they use for beating up writers when they catch them, so naturally they hated spray paint on their trains. However, we grew closer to them during the time we spent there and they really started to admire the elaborate pieces. Soon we were sharing vodka bottles with them...When they had to buff the Wholetrain in the end, some even refused to do it.

TZ: How long did it take you to complete the movie? from when you started writing the script to the first screening.

FG: It took forever. I started writing the script in 2000, we started shooting in 2004, the film premiered at the International Berlin Film Festival in 2006. And I´m still working on it every now and then.

TZ: Has anyone tried to stop this movie from being made or shown in theaters?

FG: Everyone tried to stop this movie. It started with the railway company. Then the film funders were scared to give money for a project that might instigate youngsters to become „criminals“. And when we had finally made the film, theater owners refused to show it because they didn't want „this audience“ and were scared that their theaters might get wrecked by writers.

TZ: How did you pick the actors? I noticed they had some writing skills.

FG: It was a long street casting process, I saw almost 3000 people. Of course I originally wanted to have writers play the characters, but most of them weren't skillful enough in terms of the acting. So I chose to work with self taught actors who had done some stuff before - theater work, short films - and had them taught in a graffiti writing-workshop. They learned how to sketch, control the can, do a tag and a piece. We even went to the yards with them so they´d get a feeling for what it´s like in real life. The only one who had some prior experience is Mike Adler who plays David.

TZ: Do you know if any of the actors kept on doing graffiti?

FG: Yes, some of them actually did and I saw many tags popping up that looked familiar...

TZ: Good job getting Won to paint for the movie

FG: I know Won from back in the days. He´s also from Munich, like me. I really like what he´s doing and will probably be working with him again on my next film.

TZ: How was the "RIP Tino" bombing part of the movie made? Did you get permission and have to clean it up afterwords?

FG: Well, a little bit of this and a little bit of that...

TZ: Do you plan to make any more films or shorts in the future? New projects?

FG: Yes, definitely. My new film which I´ll be shooting next summer will be totally different though, a psychological thriller with horror elements.

TZ: The movie sound track is quite good and I see you take part in most of the songs, whats your music back round?

FG: Thanks! I produced all the tracks featuring MCs and some instrumentals. I chose the artists I worked with because of their background. They've either been active as writers themselves (like Tame One of the Artifacts) or have a connection to the culture (like KRS-One, Planet Asia, Afu-Ra etc.). I sent them a film clip, my beat and some ideas I wanted them to reflect on in their lyrics and we started recording. I've been producing music for a while now. The „Wholetrain“-soundtrack is my first professionally released album though.

TZ: What are your feelings on file sharing? has it affected the release of this movie on DVD?

FG: It´s problematic, especially for independent artists. I know many artists, musicians, filmmakers etc. who have a hard time to make a living now because the sales of DVDs and CDs are down. In some ways the recent development has made it much harder to produce something that isn't exactly mainstream. Producers and distributors nowadays want to play it safe and if you have a small project with a very special target audience they won´t touch it since they know it will be ripped immediately and they won´t sell enough copies to cover their expenses. Most people don´t think about that. It´s funny, sometimes I´m getting mails from countries where the „Wholetrain“-DVD wasn't released yet, asking me when I´ll be doing „Wholetrain“ 2. Well, maybe when you stop ripping it because otherwise nobody will invest any money in it and i won´t find a producer and distributor.

TZ: So when is the DVD and the OST CD on sale? how can people get it.

.:Spanish:.

Luego empezamos a grabar.

"Writers" - 1990's UK Documentary

Student film from the 1990's on British graffiti writers. Uploaded by Hillskill

Writers is a Documentary about Graffiti in South London in the 90s. This film was produced and Directed by Chris Swain and Rajeena Sangar, I did the editing. Bit rough around the edges but I'm proud of it nonetheless. I noticed Darren from this film showing up in the Apprentice recently doing some Graffiti work, was really pleased to see that he is still doing what he loves after all these years (and making a decent living doing it!).
